SPECIAL KIDS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS: ABC’s of Pediatric Rehabilitation

The course will include six plenary sessions and six parallel sessions that aim to:
1. Provide a holistic and integrated approach to pediatric rehabilitation, involving medical, allied health, and special education practitioners; 2. Present current approaches in the medical assessment and treatment of common developmental pediatric conditions; 3. Discuss the use of standardized screening tools in the assessment of pediatric patients; 4. Elaborate on updates in the management of impairments and activity limitations in the pediatric population; 5. Demonstrate the use of intervention strategies for pediatric patients, including sensory integration, motor control and behavioral modification, among others.
There will also be a 3-hour Basic Course for Parents and Caregivers of special children that will include demonstration of techniques on handling, transfers, positioning, basic exercises, and general principles of behavior modification. The full program for the course will be disseminated by the end of September 2006. Dr. Karen Liu, PDOT, BSc, MPhil, PhD works as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She is a registered occupational therapist in Hong Kong and the USA. She has completed a number of certification courses in the area of neurological rehabilitation, including Steps 1 & 2 of the Sensory Integration Praxis Test (SIPT) by SI International which she completed in August 2005. Her areas of teaching and research lie in rehabilitation for people with developmental disabilities, evaluation for independence of people with disabilities, physical and neurological rehabilitation and stroke rehabilitation. She is also involved in consultancy services that provide medical legal reports on functional performance and rehabilitation needs for people with disabilities, functional capacity evaluation, and occupational therapy services to people with developmental dysfunction and neurological problems, among others. She has also published a number of research works in the area of neurological rehabilitation.
